A History of the Provincial Corps of Pennsylvania Loyalists – Part 1 of 7 Introduction As the American War for Independence ground into its third year, so too came the third generation Provincial Regiments raised with the fall of Philadelphia in The lessons learned during the raising of the initial corps of and the massive influx of Loyalists in would be used to try to ease the difficulties in creating new corps and augmenting existing ones. The British placed great confidence in raising numerous troops when Philadelphia was taken, and certainly they had reasons for great expectations. Pennsylvania was a large province, containing about , inhabitants including Delaware. With a population of this size, and British control of Philadelphia, it is surprising an effective brigade of Pennsylvania Loyalists could not be raised. In the end, barely one viable unit finished the war, a mere company sized corps.

In a case that bears some broad similarities to — and contains important differences with — the Pennsylvania church scandal that exploded in August, Pennsylvania’s higher education agency won’t agree to allow the public to see the year-old report on former East Stroudsburg University Vice President Isaac Sanders. The report has taken on fresh significance in the wake of a new federal lawsuit by Sanders over his firing that could put Pennsylvania taxpayers on the hook for millions of dollars.

The office of Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro — acting as the higher-ed agency’s lawyer — says the report on Sanders remains subject to an 8-year-old confidentiality agreement and can’t be released. But Sanders’ lawyer says he “could care less” if the document is disclosed, and the students who accused Sanders of sexual assault and harassment have long wanted the state’s evidence against him made public, only to be rebuffed by state officials.

Cincotta was supposed to do electro-fish surveys, whereby the fish are temporarily stunned in order to assess populations, and to take a series of conductivity readings — a basic measure of how much salt is dissolved in water. The Consol consultant took her own reading in the same location but farther from the riverbank.

Then, over the weekend, the reports of dead fish began. During the next month about 22, fish washed ashore some estimates say as many as 65, died. The mussels are a generational thing. Many of the fish were bleeding from the gills and covered in mucous; mud puppies, a kind of gilled salamander that lives underwater, had tried to escape by crawling onto nearby rocks; three-foot long muskies washed up along the riverbanks. Everything right down to the insects was killed.

Ninety-one percent of college women say a “hook-up culture” defines their campus, and a new study reveals they are right. College Women on Mating and Dating Today,” indicates that casual sexual encounters are a big part of college life. If you have been off campus for some time now, you might not be too familiar with the hook-up.

Three-fourths of those in the study agree on the following definition — The Hook-Up: When a girl and a guy get together for a physical encounter and don’t necessarily expect anything further. A physical encounter can be anything from kissing to intercourse. The report says the hook-up can happen in public places such as bars or dorms. And they almost always happen when the two parties who hook up have been drinking or are drunk.

Forty percent of the women in the study said they had experienced a hook-up. One in 10 reported having done so more than six times. At the same time, 63 percent said they want to meet a future husband at college and 83 percent said marriage is a major goal in life. Drew Pinsky, host of the MTV show Loveline, said the desire women show for commitment in the face of so many casual encounters suggests they fear asserting their true wishes.

The data has been collected from many sources, most of which are plate photos, personal observations, plate collections, and information received from various sources. This ‘work in progress’ will never be complete. There are always new plates coming out, there are formatting changes as a particular alpha-numeric series fills up, and there may be plates listed for which I have no plate code or formatting information. These show with question marks. The page is arranged with the first two columns listing prefixes and suffixes in alpha-numeric order.

Some of the plate prefixes are fixed. Some plate prefixes are progressive, such as Passenger plates that started with the DAA series. It should be noted that not all combinations in a progressive series are used and not all letters are used.

The First Steps by Harold Cramer The first map of Pennsylvania appeared in and contributed to the Pennsylvania-Maryland boundary dispute with incorrect latitude markings. A comparison of this map with others indicates its markings were anomalous within the cartography of the time and an explanation will be offered on how this may have occurred. In doing so, maps of the seventeenth century prior to perhaps used to define Pennsylvania will be reviewed. His petition of to King Charles II requests ‘letters patent for a tract of land in America, lying north of Maryland, on the east bounded with Delaware River, on the west, limited as Maryland is, and northward to extend as far as plantable, which is altogether Indian.

Penn thus gave the government ministers, particularly the Duke of York who held the lands as proprietor, great leeway in determining what lands to give him; but he also made the boundaries contingent on those of Maryland. Penn got lucky; as his Charter states, the government gave him three degrees of latitude and five of longitude, a proprietorship several times the size of Maryland.

The Charter of Pennsylvania was issued on March 4, , and defined the boundaries of the colony as follows: The said land to extend westward five degrees in longitude, to be computed from the said eastern bounds, and the said lands to be bounded on the north by the beginning of the three and fortieth degree of northern latitude, and on the south by a circle drawn at twelve miles distance from New Castle, northward and westward unto the beginning of the fortieth degree of northern latitude, and then by a straight line westward to the limits of longitude above mentioned.

The most troublesome inconsistency in the Charter was that a circle of radius twelve miles centered upon New Castle Town did not intersect the fortieth parallel, which lay some 20 miles farther north. New Castle was founded in as Fort Kasimier by the Dutch in their takeover of the Delaware from the Swedes, though Dutch control was not fully established until The town established around Fort Kasimier was called New Amstel. The fortieth parallel is identified as the southern boundary in the Pennsylvania Charter, but the Maryland Charter is not so explicit.

The Virginia Company complained that the lower Delmarva Peninsula was already a ‘long time planted’ and should be excluded. The Maryland Charter was therefore altered to exclude all land lying south of a parallel line from Watkins Point to the Atlantic Ocean, essentially the present Maryland-Virginia boundary.
